University of Twente and Driessen

Starting on September 1, 2023, we have become the official cooperation partner of the University of Twente for the payroll service of all the student on call workers.  Driessen will be responsible for managing the complete employment of student on-call workers, and we are ready to answer all questions from both students and the university.

Student on-call worker

A student on-call worker is defined as someone who performs work that does not directly contribute to academic teaching or research.

Recruitment and selection

Recruitment and selection of student on-call workers remains a responsibility of the University of Twente. We provide  post-selection services with a focus on our role as a good employer.

FAQ

A student who does not yet have an active contract with Driessen must be registered through the My Driessen Portal. The Manual (see "Important Documents" above) describes the enrollment process.

Should a student currently be employed through Driessen and intend to work in a different department, you can register this change by contacting us at utstudentenbanen@driessen.nl. Please ensure that your email includes the following information:

  • Student name & student number
  • Department, Cost center & brief description of work.

All details are clearly described in the Manual (found under "Important Documents").

You can approve employees' timesheets through the My Driessen Portal. You can do this weekly or every four weeks, depending on your preference*. As soon as a declaration is ready for you, you will be notified.

* The salary payment schedule and final approval date can be found in the manual.

Your Management Report can be found in My Driessen under the heading Management Informatie. Various filters can be set to bring up the correct Management Information. Note: A job is defined in My Driessen as a Subdienstverband (Sub-Service Job).

We are implementing the Labor Market Balance Act in compliance with legal requirements. This entails the following:

  • There is a minimum payout of 3 hours per call.
  • If called hours are cancelled within four days before the call, they will still be paid.
  • After 12 months, the student will receive a fixed hours offer based on the average number of hours worked per 4 weeks.
  • The student is responsible for declaring hours resulting from the Workforce Balance Act.

Students studying at the University of Twente are registered with Driessen as 'student on-call workers.’ This means that these students will work at the University of Twente through Driessen based on on-call contracts. The employment agreements of the students will include a section related to reference days and hours. This refers to the days and hours when the student is available to work, but it does not imply that the student will work on fixed days and times. Instead, it serves as an indication of when the student is available for work, and no strict obligations can be derived from it. In practice, the specific workdays and times will be determined in consultation with the supervisor.

The inclusion of these reference days and hours is mandatory by law since August 1, 2022. Below, you will find an example of how these reference days and hours can be filled in for a student who is available for an average of 8 to 16 hours per week, on different days, preferably in the late afternoon/evening, but not on Fridays and Sundays.

  • Monday 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Tuesday 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Wednesday 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM
  • Thursday 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Friday -
  • Saturday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Sunday –

According to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities, employees are entitled to an allowance for unusual working hours in certain cases. Below is an overview of the situations in which the allowance applies and the corresponding amounts of the allowance.

Students are eligible for an allowance of 40% on top of their current gross hourly wage in the following cases:

  • Monday to Friday between 12:00 AM and 7:00 AM and between 8:00 PM and 12:00 AM
  • All day on Saturdays

Students are eligible for an allowance of 75% on top of their current gross hourly wage in the following cases:

  • All day on Sundays.
  • Public holidays.

When an employee is scheduled to work but can not due to illness, the student should report their sickness through the Mijn Driessen portal. It is crucial that the student also notifies the contact person at the University of Twente of the sick report so that they are informed of the situation. Additionally, reports of recovery should also be submitted through Mijn Driessen.

The responsibility for sickness lies with the employer (Driessen), and Driessen also manages and provides guidance for sickness (sickness absence management).

The contract runs throughout the period of study (maximum of 5 years + option 3 months extension. The moment the student is no longer enrolled as a student at UT, they are required to notify us. The moment they deregister as a student, the contract will also automatically end. UT will monitor this on a periodic basis as well.

No, a student on-call worker cannot work for the University of Twente from abroad. The work must take place in the Netherlands. Reasons why a student on-call worker cannot work from abroad include:

  • If a student on-call worker temporarily resides and works from abroad, it can have significant consequences for the Dutch social insurances for which the student on-call worker is insured in the Netherlands. To prevent problems, is has been decided that the student on-call worker cannot work from abroad.
  • If a student on-call worker temporarily resides and works abroad, the country where the student on-call worker is staying must impose taxes on the salary. This involves the so called  international payroll, a process of paying employees who work for an employer in the Netherlands from abroad. Because this is a highly complex and financially costly process, it has been decided that a student on-call worker cannot work for the University of Twente from abroad.
  • Unfortunately, it is not possible to process and pay claims for hours worked abroad. Submitted claims of this nature will be rejected by Driessen and returned to the approver.
